Rodri and Rico are two cousins unalike in every way except for a shared contempt for their parents’ values and a deep connection to their free spirited grandfather, Rodrigo. Lina Wertmuller and her favorite actor, Giancarlo Giannini, took large steps toward establishing their international reputations with this 1973 tragi-comedy about an oaf who gets it into his head to assassinate Mussolini right after the Fascist takeover of Italy. The hero’s plans, however, get a little off-track when he falls for a prostitute in the brothel where he’s hiding out. As always, Wertmuller’s politics can get ahead of the rest of her film. But her sharply perceptive and comic takes on the collapse of various human constructions–social divisions, schemes, dignity–in intense situations is the stuff of genuine revelation. Giannini’s renown in the 1970s as a new Chaplin, an innocent buffeted by the world’s brutality and easily distracted, got a big boost from his work here. –Tom Keogh

Silent comedy (and especially Buster Keaton) buffs will thrill to this second volume of five revelatory shorts by Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle. “Back Stage,” “Coney Island,” “The Rough House,” “The Garage,” and “Good Night Nurse!” were made between 1918 and 1920 at the height of Arbuckle’s popularity before scandal tragically cut short his career and forever unjustly tarnished his name. They represent a vital missing chapter in film comedy history. In addition to rescuing Arbuckle from obscurity, they also provide a fascinating nascent glimpse of Keaton. These are his first films, and one can see the seeds of his flowering genius. Arbuckle got his start with Keystone Studio founder Mack Sennett, the original King of Comedy, for whom he made more than 200 shorts in five years. These breakneck, gag-filled reels in which characters run amok show his influence. “Good Night Nurse!” is one of Arbuckle’s best, a fever dream in which he finds himself at the mercy of sanitarium doctor Keaton (brandishing a cleaver and drenched with blood). Fans of the “Great Stone Face” will be surprised to see him smiling and laughing as he flirts with Fatty, rather fetchingly disguised in a nurse’s uniform. Also of note is a fleeting gag in “The Rough House,” in which Roscoe sticks two forks into a pair of dinner rolls and enacts a dance that imitates his former Sennett costar, Charlie Chaplin, who would later expand this routine for his masterpiece, “The Gold Rush.” Arbuckle and Keaton’s partnership ended on a high note with “The Garage,” their last and one of their best collaborations. –Donald Liebenson

Jurassic Park
Steven Spielberg’s 1993 mega-hit rivals Jaws as the most intense and frightening film he’d ever made prior to Schindler’s List, but it was also among his weakest stories. Based on Michael Crichton’s novel about an island amusement park populated by cloned dinosaurs, the film works best as a thrill ride with none of the interesting human dynamics of Spielberg’s Jaws. That lapse proves unfortunate, but there’s no shortage of raw terror as a rampaging T. rex and nasty raptors try to make fast food out of the cast. The effects are still astonishing (despite the fact that the computer-generated technology has since been improved upon) and at times primeval, such as the sight of a herd of whatever-they-are scampering through a valley. –Tom Keogh
The Lost World: Jurassic Park
After the global phenomenon that was Jurassic Park, it was a given that novelist Michael Crichton would conjure up a sequel and that Steven Spielberg would then commit it to film. Considering the potential profit involved, it was practically a commercial mandate. Perhaps it was inevitable that both efforts were contrived, and well below the talents of Crichton (well, maybe) and certainly Spielberg, who just didn’t have the heart for this recycling after the artistic triumph of Schindler’s List. What we’re left with, for better and worse, is a redundant blockbuster that still benefits from Spielberg’s mastery of high-intensity action sequences and the further development of amazing computer-generated special effects. What’s missing is the awe and wonder that made Jurassic Park a technical marvel and a dazzling product of scientific imagination. The story’s a no-brainer: after the deadly fiasco of the original dinosaur theme park, we’re taken (along with returning star Jeff Goldblum) to a second island where genetically engineered dinosaurs still thrive under the watchful eye of Goldblum’s biologist girlfriend (Julianne Moore). But a devious capitalist (Arliss Howard) is determined to export dinosaurs to a new park in San Diego, financing a hunt-and-capture expedition that results in another series of fatal disasters. In Spielberg’s hands this movie’s more exciting than it has a right to be, given the creative paucity of Crichton’s novel and David Koepp’s adapted screenplay. The special effects are state-of-the-art, and the T. rex’s rampage through the streets of San Diego is nothing short of spectacular; but apparently an improvement upon the shortcomings of Jurassic Park was too much to hope for. –Jeff Shannon

Men of Honor presents a great role model for younger viewers, yet it’s rated R due to abundant use of the F word. With appropriate discretion, parents should allow their preteen and teenaged children to see this rousing if altogether conventional biopic inspired by the life of Carl Brashear. Played with gravity and gumption by Cuba Gooding Jr., Brashear was the first African American to become a master diver in the U.S. Navy, despite the lingering effects of segregation, opposition from Navy brass, and the amputation of his left leg following a tragic on-duty accident. Robert De Niro adds marquee value and salty bluster as Billy Sunday, the drunken, redneck (and fictionalized) Master Chief who watches, with gradual admiration, as Brashear attains his ultimate goal through sheer force of will.
This is all quite uplifting on its surface, but in attempting to hit the requisite highlights of an inspiring biography, director George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food) reduces Brashear’s achievement to a succession of clichés, forcing Gooding and De Niro to battle sentiment with their noteworthy performances. As Sunday’s neglected wife, Charlize Theron is completely extraneous; Hal Holbrook’s diving-school commander is a ranting caricature; and newcomer Aunjanue Ellis barely registers as Brashear’s wife (in part because their obligatory romance is handled with an utter lack of finesse). There’s no question that Brashear’s efforts are heroic and worthy of recognition, so Men of Honor serves its basic purpose. Still, one can’t help but wonder if Brashear’s story would be even more impressive with a more authentic treatment. –Jeff Shannon

A landmark in the history of African American cinema and one of the most important films of the 1970s, Ganja & Hess suffered a tortured fate that nearly resulted in its extinction. Briefly released in New York City in 1973, it was originally intended to be a “blaxploitation” horror thriller, but actor-director Bill Gunn (who died in 1989) created something much more complex and artistically expressive: a vampire film starring the late Duane Jones (earlier immortalized as the hero of Night of the Living Dead) that never mentions the word “vampire,” addressing interwoven themes of addiction, passion, class distinction, faith, and the place of blacks in a dominant white society. Unfolding on a sensual level that is better experienced than explained, the film is equal parts dream, nightmare, and existential odyssey.
Not surprisingly, a film that so daringly defied convention was hard to market, and after its failed release it was drastically re-edited and eventually released to video under no fewer than seven different titles. Fortunately, a single print of Gunn’s original version survived at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, its reputation rising through revival screenings until Ganja & Hess achieved cult status as a “lost” milestone of its decade. The DVD release preserves Gunn’s original cut in superb condition (considering the film’s turbulent history) and includes engaging commentary by surviving cast and crew and an insightful essay reprinted from Video Watchdog magazine. And while Ganja & Hess is certainly not for all tastes, there’s no denying that its fully restored release on DVD represents an historic occasion that any cinephile should celebrate. –Jeff Shannon
